Editor’s note, September 23, 2026: This piece drew on 197 half marathons in the index. The half marathon page now holds 205 races, 39 of them scored. On September 22 we found that RunSignup’s race search returns races in alphabetical order and stops at 5,000 results, so every race we had ever synced was named with a number or a letter from A to F. Searching state by state found 16,101 upcoming US races; the index now holds 7,000, the most our hosting can serve.

The half marathon is where American road racing actually lives. It’s long enough to demand training and short enough to keep your weekend, which is why more runners finish 13.1 than any other distance. Our index scores 197 US halfs on field, history, credentials, and character. Six separate themselves. In score order:

Why no half breaks 80
A quick word on the ceiling, because it’s doing something deliberate. The credential axis pays for the machinery of championship road racing: USATF certification, record eligibility, Boston-qualifier status, major-series standing. A half marathon can be certified (all six here are), but there’s no such thing as a Boston-qualifying half, and the majors machinery lives at 26.2. So every race on this list posts the same 40 in the credential column, and the composite is decided by field, history, and character. Read these scores against each other, since a 76 half and a 76 marathon are different animals.
The two New Yorks
Brooklyn takes the top spot on the numbers: the biggest half field in America (around 30,000 runners) pointed downhill through Prospect Park to a finish on the Coney Island boardwalk, with four decades of history behind it (est. 1981). It is the rare mega-race that still feels like a borough block party.
Its younger sibling, the NYC Half (est. 2006), is the inverse experiment: what happens when you close Times Square on a Sunday morning and run 30,000 people through it. The character score is a perfect 100. No other half in the country has a skyline moment like it. At twenty years old, though, it simply hasn’t banked the history of the races above it. Duluth and Indy: the institutions
The Garry Bjorklund Half (est. 1991) runs the last 13.1 miles of Grandma’s Marathon course along Lake Superior, and its perfect character score is the North Shore doing the talking: Scenic Highway 61, water on your right the whole way, 8,500 runners in a town that turns itself entirely over to race weekend. It’s also the hardest bib on this list to get, because demand outruns the field cap every year.
The Indy Mini (est. 1977) posts the second-best longevity score here and owns the most famous quarter mile in American half-marathoning: a full lap of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, kissing the yard of bricks at speed. Twenty thousand runners make it one of the largest halfs in the country, and it’s been doing this for nearly fifty years.
The fast ones
Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego carries the DNA of the race series that put bands on the course and made the half a mass-participation distance in the first place. Austin International, the rebranded 3M Half, is the aim-a-PR race: a fast point-to-point drop into the city that fills with runners chasing a number. It has a smaller field and a sharper purpose.
