Best 5Ks in the US

The 5K is where most runners start and where most races happen, which makes it the hardest distance to rank. There are thousands of them, the typical one draws a few hundred people once a year, and few publish the kind of history a marathon does. So before the rows, here is what we can and can't measure.

Of the 5Ks ranked here, about nine in ten are scored on two signals: field size and years of history. A small group adds a third, and only one, the Carlsbad 5000, is measured on all four. Our formula pulls a partly measured race toward the middle, so scores on this page run lower than on the marathon page. That isn't a verdict on the races. It means we know less about them, and we'd rather show that than guess.

Thanksgiving owns the top of this list. Turkey trots are about a fifth of the races here and nearly half of the top 25, and that isn't a quirk of the formula. They are the rare 5Ks that draw thousands of runners every year and have done it for decades: Clearwater's has run since 1979, Charlottesville's Boar's Head since 1981.

Listings come from RunSignup, so a great 5K that registers somewhere else won't appear unless it's added by hand. If yours is missing, suggest it at bestraces.com/suggest. Scores use public data only and are never sold, every component is printed on its row, and race directors can claim their listing free.

Composite /100 · FLD field · HST history · CRD credentials · CHR character · top 250 of 252 scored

1 Carlsbad 5000 Carlsbad, CA Apr 2027 USATF 75.7/100

The fastest 5K in the world, by the record books. Since 1986 the course has produced 16 world records and eight U.S. records, including Deena Kastor's 14:53 in 2002. It runs out and back along Carlsbad Boulevard on the Pacific coast, starting and finishing in Carlsbad Village under the town sign. It is also the only 5K here we can measure on all four signals, which is part of why it scores so well.

2 Achieva Clearwater Turkey Trot Clearwater, FL Nov 2026 64.9/100

Clearwater's Thanksgiving morning tradition, run by the city since 1979 and in its 47th edition this year. It splits into two waves: a chip-timed 7 a.m. competitive 5K with awards and a mug for the top 100 men and women, and an 8 a.m. family wave that welcomes strollers and leashed dogs. A field of more than 2,100 and nearly half a century of history carry its score.

3 45th Annual Boar's Head Turkey Trot 5K Charlottesville, VA Nov 2026 63.2/100

A Charlottesville Thanksgiving tradition since 1981. It starts and finishes at the Boar's Head Resort and winds through the surrounding neighborhoods on a course its own organizers call very hilly. It benefits UVA Health Children's and has raised more than $1.2 million for the hospital. About 1,600 runners and 45 years of history carry its score.

4 Baton Rouge Turkey Trot Baton Rouge, LA Nov 2026 62.0/100

Thanksgiving morning in downtown Baton Rouge, with a 5K and a one-mile fun run, produced by FRESHJUNKIE Racing for the March of Dimes. Its field of 2,450 is one of the largest of any 5K here, and it has run since 1987.

5 50th Annual Sandy Claws Beach Run Sarasota, FL Dec 2026 61.8/100

Sarasota County's December beach run, in its 50th year, raced on the hard-packed sand of Siesta Beach. The field is small, around 500, but fifty years is a long run for any 5K, and history carries a fifth of the score.

6 34th Annual YMCA Turkey Trot Fredericksburg, VA Nov 2026 60.7/100

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in its 34th year. Its field of more than 3,100 is one of the biggest of any 5K here, which is what lifts it above older but smaller races.

7 63rd Annual Asbury Park Polar Bear Races Asbury Park, NJ Dec 2026 60.7/100

The oldest race on this list. The Polar Bear Races have been run on the Asbury Park and Bradley Beach boardwalks between Christmas and New Year's since 1964, with a 5K, a mile and a 5K racewalk. The field is small, about 300, so it ranks on history, and 63 years of it is hard to beat.

8 Enmarket Savannah Bridge Run Savannah, GA Dec 2026 59.7/100

The 5K is one crossing of the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, a 1.4-mile span at a 5.5% grade that crests 196 feet above the Savannah River. The 10K crosses it twice, and the Double Pump runs both races for three crossings in one morning. Held since 1992, with a 5K field of more than 2,100.

Charleston's December run, in its 35th year, with a field of more than 3,000 and a USATF-certified course, one of the few races on this list measured on a third signal.
