Since then we have begun reading finisher counts from RunSignup’s posted results and founding years from race names, and 451 of the 2,911 headline-distance 5Ks now carry at least one measured signal; 266 of them clear the scoring bar. Editor’s note, September 23, 2026: This piece counted 2,733 headline-distance 5Ks among 4,863 races, or 56% of the index. The index now holds 7,000 races and 3,637 of them run the 5K as their headline distance — 52%, so the 5K’s dominance is a little smaller than it looked. The September 2 note above put the scorable 5Ks at 266; 380 now clear the bar. On September 22 we found that RunSignup’s race search returns races in alphabetical order and stops at 5,000 results, so every race we had ever synced was named with a number or a letter from A to F. Searching state by state found 16,101 upcoming US races; the index now holds 7,000, the most our hosting can serve.
Open our 5K rankings page and something looks broken. One race sits at 75.7. Every other race on the page scores 15.0, and it is the same 15.0 across 2,732 races.
Nothing is broken. That page is an accurate picture of how little anyone writes down about the most popular distance in American running.
The scale of it
Of the 4,863 races in our index, 2,733 run the 5K as their headline distance. That’s 56% of everything we track, spread across all 50 states plus DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Count races that put a 5K somewhere on the schedule and the number climbs to 3,473, or better than seven in ten. Florida alone has 256 of them, Texas 208, Ohio 160.
Now count the ones with a documented field size, founding year, or USATF certification:

The documentation rate collapses as the distance shrinks. By the time you reach the 5K, the distance that actually carries American participation, the public record is one race deep.
Why everyone ties at 15.0
Our composite is 30% field, 20% history, 25% credentials, 25% character. A race with no published field size, no founding year, and no certification scores zero on the first three. Character defaults to the midpoint. Twenty-five percent of 60 is 15.0, and that is the entire explanation for the 2,732-way tie. That number is simply the score of a race we know nothing about. It passes no judgment on the races themselves.
The one exception is the Carlsbad 5000 (est. 1986, 8,000 runners, USATF certified), which scores 75.7 on an 82 for field, 80 for longevity, and a perfect 100 for character. It is the only 5K in America we can currently rank on evidence rather than absence.
The documented 5Ks belong to races longer than a 5K
Five more races in our index have both a documented history and a 5K: the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, Gate River Run, Indy Mini-Marathon, Eugene Marathon, and Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half. Every one of them ranks in the slice of its headline distance, because that’s where the field size and the founding year belong. Their 5K is a companion event riding on a bigger race’s paperwork.
So the pattern is that documentation follows the marquee event, and a 5K gets it by riding along with a bigger race. The standalone neighborhood 5K, the Saturday morning race that is the on-ramp to the sport for most American runners, inherits none of it.
What we did about it
A national leaderboard where 2,732 races tie is useless for choosing a race, so we built the surface that actually helps: 74 city 5K pages covering 625 races, because at 5K distance the question runners ask is “what’s near me in three weeks?” rather than “what’s the best 5K in America?” San Antonio has 29, Atlanta 28, Houston 19.
The rest is a standing invitation. Every one of those 2,732 races has a director who knows the field size and the founding year we’re missing, and claiming a listing is free and can’t buy a better rank. The formula doesn’t have an input for who asked. It only has an input for what’s on the record.
Right now, for the 5K, that record is one race long.
