Almost all of them are small local races with no data behind them. Six are not. These six clear our scoring bar, and none of them has a category page to live on:

The receipts
They are not niche. Between them these six start 145,400 runners a year. Broad Street’s 40,000 is the fifth-largest field we have on record — behind only the New York City Marathon, Chicago, the Bolder Boulder, and Peachtree, and ahead of every other race in America we’ve measured. Bloomsday’s 33,000 is sixth. A distance with no leaderboard is drawing bigger crowds than almost every distance that has one.
They are old. All six were founded between 1912 and 1980. Bay to Breakers, Cherry Blossom, and Falmouth all post a perfect 100 on longevity; Bloomsday scores 98, Gate River 96, Broad Street 92. Not one of them is a recent invention chasing a gap in the calendar.
And they are capped. This is the part worth sitting with. Our credential component — 25% of the composite — awards 40 points for USATF certification, 30 for Boston-qualifier status, and 30 for World Marathon Major status. The last two are structurally unavailable to anything that isn’t 26.2 miles. All six of these races are USATF certified. All six therefore score exactly 40 on credentials, and no non-marathon road race can do better.
Run the arithmetic: that ceiling costs them up to 15 composite points against an otherwise identical marathon. Bay to Breakers sits eighth in the country at 83.3 with a hand tied behind its back. Cherry Blossom is ninth, Falmouth twelfth, Bloomsday fifteenth, Gate River twenty-first, Broad Street twenty-fourth — all six inside the national top 25, all six carrying the same 40.
We’re not going to pretend that’s elegant. The credential column measures what governing bodies actually certify, and the marathon is simply the distance the sport built its credentials around. The honest read is that these six overcome a rubric that wasn’t drawn with them in mind, on field size, history, and character — Bay to Breakers, Cherry Blossom, and Falmouth each score a perfect 100 on character, our scenery-and-terrain component. Broad Street, a flat straight line down a city artery, scores 60 and still makes the top 25 on volume and vintage alone.
The lesson for a runner reading a leaderboard: the distance you sort by is a filter, not a verdict. Six of the best road races in America are sitting outside every filter we offer.
