The Best Races in Florida, Ranked — and Why 38 of the Top 42 Are 5Ks

Editor’s note, September 15, 2026: Since this was published, we checked every race in our index against USATF’s course database. For several Florida races a certification was the second measured signal they needed, so the state list now holds 53 ranked races rather than 42. That is still more than any other state, out of 585 nationally rather than 405. Several of the claims below have moved. Forty-two of the 53 are 5Ks, not 38 of 42. Florida’s halves and marathons are no longer absent: four half marathons and two marathons now make the list, led by the Naples Half Marathon at No. 10, and there are three 10Ks rather than two. Sixteen of the 53 are USATF certified, where the piece found only Gate River. None is a Boston qualifier. The list starts 41,578 runners, so Gate River’s 14,000 are 34% of the total rather than 44%, and without it the median field is about 283. Forty-four of the 53 run between November and March, nine of them on Thanksgiving morning. In the table, the Cocoa Beach Turkey Trot enters at No. 5. The Trot Against Poverty 5K falls from No. 7 to No. 14, because it is certified too: a certification on its own scores 40 of 100 on our credentials measure, less than the neutral 50 we count for a signal we have not measured, so measuring it lowered its score from 53.6 to 51.1. Gate River remains the only Florida race in the national top 25. The methodology explains how signals combine.

Editor’s note, September 23, 2026: Florida had 396 races in the index here, revised to 585 nationally ranked in the note above. The state now holds 535 races — more than any other — with 461 on the state list and 58 of them ranked, against 678 ranked races nationally. On September 22 we found that RunSignup’s race search returns races in alphabetical order and stops at 5,000 results, so every race we had ever synced was named with a number or a letter from A to F. Searching state by state found 16,101 upcoming US races; the index now holds 7,000, the most our hosting can serve.

Florida has 396 races in our index and 42 of them clear our scoring floor. That is more than any other state: more than California (27), more than New York (27), more than Texas (21). Across the whole country, 405 races currently carry a score high enough to appear on a state ranking. One state in ten holds a tenth of them.

A closer look at what those 42 races are shows something more specific than a running superpower.

The Florida twelve

The other thirty are on the full Florida ranking.

Race pages carry more than the score. Jacksonville topped 80°F on March 6 in four of the five years from 2022 to 2026, which you can see year by year on the Gate River Run page, along with places to stay near the race.

Four things the list tells you

It is a 5K state. Thirty-eight of the 42 run the 5K as their headline distance. There is one 15K, two 10Ks, and one trail ultra, the Vista View 360 in Davie, which is the only non-road race in the group. Not one Florida marathon or half marathon scores high enough to make the state list. Six of the ten highest-scoring races in the country are marathons; here they are absent entirely.

One race is nearly half the state. Those 42 races start a combined 32,023 runners. The Gate River Run accounts for 14,000 of them, or 44% of the total, from one morning in Jacksonville. It is also the only Florida race in the 25 highest-scoring races in the country, the only one on the list that is USATF certified, and one of just two with a founding year on record: 1978. Take it out and the median Florida field on this list is 271 runners.

Florida races in the winter. Thirty-four of the 42 run between November and March, and seven of them go off on the same morning: Thanksgiving. Exactly one race on the list runs in high summer: the Firecracker 5K in Sebring, on the Fourth of July, in its 34th year.

Nobody here is chasing a time. Zero of the 42 are Boston qualifiers, and 41 of the 42 carry no USATF certification we can find. That says nothing about quality. A well-run charity 5K in Punta Gorda has no reason to buy a course certification nobody will ask for. But it does mean Florida’s ranked races earn their scores almost entirely on field size and longevity, the two signals a community race generates just by existing for decades.

What is missing

Florida’s marathons and halves are missing because of a documentation gap, and their absence says nothing about how good they are. The state runs plenty of them, but we have no field size, founding year, or certification on record for the ones we list. It is the same problem we described in the 5K blind spot. Our formula has no input for reputation, so a race we know nothing about scores like a race with nothing to show.
