BestRacesFlorida has 396 races in our index and 42 of them clear our scoring floor. That is more than any other state — more than California (27), more than New York (27), more than Texas (21). Across the whole country, 405 races currently carry a score high enough to appear on a state ranking. One state in ten holds a tenth of them.
Then you look at what those 42 races actually are, and Florida stops looking like a running superpower and starts looking like something more specific.

Four things the list tells you
It is a 5K state. Thirty-eight of the 42 run the 5K as their headline distance. There is one 15K, two 10Ks, and one trail ultra — the Vista View 360 in Davie, the only non-road race in the group. Not one Florida marathon or half marathon scores high enough to make the state list. Six of the ten highest-scoring races in the country are marathons; here they are absent entirely.
One race is nearly half the state. Those 42 races start a combined 32,023 runners. The Gate River Run accounts for 14,000 of them — 44% of the total, from one morning in Jacksonville. It is also the only Florida race in the 25 highest-scoring races in the country, the only one on the list that is USATF certified, and one of just two with a founding year on record: 1978. Take it out and the median Florida field on this list is 271 runners.
Florida races in the winter. Thirty-four of the 42 run between November and March, and seven of them go off on the same morning: Thanksgiving. Exactly one race on the list runs in high summer — the Firecracker 5K in Sebring, on the Fourth of July, in its 34th year.
Nobody here is chasing a time. Zero of the 42 are Boston qualifiers, and 41 of the 42 carry no USATF certification we can find. That is not a quality judgment — a well-run charity 5K in Punta Gorda has no reason to buy a course certification nobody will ask for. But it does mean Florida’s ranked races earn their scores almost entirely on field size and longevity, the two signals a community race generates just by existing for decades.
What is missing
The absence of Florida marathons and halves is a documentation gap, not a verdict. The state runs plenty of them; we have no field size, founding year, or certification on record for the ones we list — the same problem we described in the 5K blind spot. Our formula has no input for reputation, so a race we know nothing about scores like a race with nothing to show.
